Observations About Kids’ TV
Working with families the way I do, you end up catching a fair bit of children’s television. Over the past few years, I’ve come to a few conclusions.
~The only tolerable WonderPet is the turtle, Tuck. The duck is kind of a b*tch and the guinea pig can be an insufferable know-it-all. But the turtle is sweet and adorable and I love his little watershoes.
~Swiper the Fox doesn’t steal things to buy drugs or feed his family…. he doesn’t even take them! He just “swipes” things and throws them away – he either just does it to be a jerk, or I think he needs treatment for kleptomania.
~WHERE ARE MAX AND RUBY’S PARENTS??
~The blonde guy on Hi-5 is cute but the dark haired one is borderline creepy. No, scratch that. Straight up creepy.
~Where do Toot & Puddle get the money for all this airfare and cabs?
~The orange thing on Yo Gabba Gabba looks like something you’d keep in your nightstand if you know what I’m sayin’… I also NEVER understand what’s going on on that show. I guess I’m just not cool enough!
~It irritates me when animals are supposed to be animals but they act like humans. Like, I’m down with shows where the characters are obviously people but just look like animals, like Toot & Puddle or Olivia. I just hate when, like in WonderPets or Diego, they act like they’re teaching you something about animals but really the frog is playing with his grandchildren.
And finally (for now at least)…
~The Upside Down show is one of the funniest shows on television, for kids OR adults!
Anything interesting you’ve noticed about the stuff your kids watch?
Hi Devon!
Well, I don’t have kids yet *but* amazingly I love all Disney and Pixar movies and I have never seen an epsiode of Justice League I didn’t like. Seriously up until this TV season I thought the Justice League was funnier than most sitcoms (have you seen Whitney? there is hope!) Anyway, there is this one episode where Hawk Girl says, too much talking not enough hitting. I took it as a spiritual lesson. There comes a point when after all the deliberations you have to DO SOMETHING.
Buy the dress, make the phone call, start the website, or hmmm hire a doula to help you with your baby! 😉
Maggie
Love it! That might be my new motto… though I won’t share it with my clients, they may take it the wrong way 😉
I haven’t seen any of those shows except for Max and Ruby. When we first started reading the books, I kept asking that very question! Ruby is a super responsible sister… wow! lol
It is one of the Great Questions of Our Time.
OMG you are hilarious Devon! You have another career in standup comedy, I think!
Thanks Kimberly! I do like to bring humor and fun to everything I do!
Ha!! So true! That’s hilarious!
I take issue with animals acting as humans having pet animals. Case in point… Arthur (an Aardvark!) has a puppy. Why doesn’t the puppy get to wear a pair of pants and glasses and go to school?!
RIGHT? I think the worst is Mickey Mouse – Goofy and Pluto are BOTH dogs, yet one talks and one barks. WTF?
I haven’t paid attention to Wonder Pets. I think it’s one of those kids shows that you can just tune out (fortunately!). I’m also annoyed at the human-acting animals on Dora and Diego.
That’s very true, Hannah… I only started to notice it when I was nannying a few years ago because my little C was OBSESSED with it. I started to catch little things and eventually realized what the characters’ personalities really are.
OMG! Graeme and I just read this and laughed, laughed, laughed! That damn guinea pig IS a know-it-all, and my kids are ALWAYS asking where Max and Ruby’s mama is! (As an aside, the grandparents had a Max and Ruby book that I read to the boys over Thanksgiving…turns out I can do a really good annoying-Ruby imitation and I was cracking myself up so badly I couldn’t even read…I love amusing myself…)
Hahaha Kate! I’m going to have to hear that one!
I did find a Max & Ruby book where Max was a baby and the parents were actually in it, but that’s the only time I’ve ever seen them!
